Norfolk Village State School shines at Asia Pacific short-film awards
Sydney, 02 December 2010 – Panasonic Australia is pleased to announce that Norfolk Village State School from Ormeau, Queensland, has scooped the award for Best Script at the Asia Pacific Panasonic Kid Witness News (KWN) Regional Awards held in Singapore yesterday.
Norfolk Village State School won the award for its short film entitled, Environmental Rescue, which looks into a secret, animal-run organisation that responds to emergency calls by fellow wildlife. In this film, two workers clearing bushland are unaware that they are about to destroy the home of a mother bird and her babies. The mother bird calls the Environmental Rescue satellite and Kangaroo and Wombat come to her rescue. The film’s message, symbolically delivered by the animals, is to make humans more aware of our wildlife friends.
Norfolk Village State School competed against students from six other countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. As the Australian National Winner, Norfolk Village State School will also go into the running to represent the Asia Pacific region at the Global KWN Awards ceremony. The top six countries as selected by the global KWN judges will then be invited to attend the awards ceremony to be held in Hollywood, USA, next July. The KWN global finalists, who will be announced in May 2011, will also have the opportunity to participate in a cultural exchange program during their visit.
Representing Norfolk Village State School at the Regional Awards were Year 6 students, Raylene Galuzen-Meakins and Sedisha Chatfield accompanied by teacher and KWN coordinator, Peter Evans.
Commenting on the students’ achievement, Peter Evans said, “We are extremely thrilled to have won Best Script at the KWN Asia Pacific Regional Awards. The students are immensely proud to be here in Singapore, representing Australia. It’s a huge credit to our Year 6 class that their short film is being recognised on the international stage.”
Steve Rust, Managing Director, Panasonic Australia, said, “I would like to congratulate the students from Norfolk Village State School for their success at the Asia Pacific Regional Awards. Year after year, Australia is proving to be the country to beat as our students continue to deliver creative film concepts and high levels of technical excellence.”
At the Australian National KWN Awards in Sydney in October, Norfolk Village State School took home the prestigious Regional Award, as well as the National Primary School and Queensland Primary School awards. The students were also recognised for their technical excellence, taking home two National Spotlight Awards in the Sound and Editing categories.
